Riverside Guest House

Barb provided this shot of the Riverside Guest House on Shu Pai Road in Tien Mou. I don't remember the place, but then I didn't spend much time in Tien Mou either. This shot was likely taken around 1979.

Is anyone else familiar with this place or ever stay there?

She also mentioned an earlier comment that someone made about "Burger Queen." The commenter said that the restaurant is still there today, near the Caves book store intersection. Barb said that they used to put cucumber slices on their sandwiches instead of pickles. Of course to anyone familiar with "Chicago style" hot dogs, that makes perfect sense.

I think I once wrote about the little restaurant that was on the ground floor of the Roma Hotel in 1973-74. I don't remember what it was called, but my Air Force buddy Larry and I ate there one day and he decided to try a menu item labeled Pork Chop Soup. When his order arrived, it was a bowl of broth with a pork chop in it. As Arte Johnson used to say, "Verrry interesting!"

That image brings back a bunch of memories. All good ones. That shot is taken from Road 1 on the "long way" to the BOT near the Navy Hospital. The Riverside was exactly as the name implies: next to the river and right before the turn-off to Cherry Hill that was on the other side of the bridge. Never stayed at the Riverside per se, although I know from firsthand experience that it was a very popular place for Taipei American School students to party. I was at TAS from 1972 until my graduation in 1978 and during that period it was very common for a bunch of kids to throw some money in a hat a rent a suite for a night or two of full-tilt-boogie partying. No parents, no PMO and no questions asked. Just BYOB and spread the word. Thanks for posting.

I went to elementary school together with the grandson of the owner of the Guest House, Mr. Chang. There were two swimming pools next to the Guest House called "Riverside Swimming Pool". We went swimming there from time to time although the size of the pools was actually pretty small, no comparison with the swimming pool at the TAS. I think Mr. Chang sold the property sometime in the late 1980's. The building is still there today but it's no longer a hotel?
BTW, can you see the white "buildings" on the hill in the background of the picture? Matter of fact, those are graves. The mountains farther away in the background belong to what is called today the Yangmingshan National Park.

Good photo. I remember it well as I lived in the new BOT homes in Tien Mu....
Somehow the road looks more narrow than I remember....Of course that was 30 years ago....

Although I don't specifically remember this hotel I was living 200 yards from here when this photo was taken and I must have passed this place hundreds of times.

I have memories of the bridge across the river, towards Cherry Hill (ask a westerner in Tienmu today where Cherry Hill is and they will stare at you blankly...) as we got stuck there once in our big blue American school bus.
Someone has decided that there was going to be an unannouced air raid test so they closed the bridge right as our bus arrived. So we sat there looking out the window (actually the windows were wired up on those buses so that kids did not get decapitated, loose limbs and so on) watching as they pulled barbed wire across the bridge and went through their drill. It lasted a few minutes and then we were on our way.

I always wondered if those mesh window coverings were to protect the kids or the pedestrians.

ALL,

This building is still there. However, it is surrounded by new buildings and you can still see the Chinese characters. Now it is a dry cleaners on the first floor, but not sure what the 2nd and higher floors have.
